I am a huge fan of the Cincinnati Reds, Denver Broncos, and Temple Owls basketball. I try to be unbiased, but being a diehard fan of my teams, it can be hard. Oh nevermind, I have my opinions and I don't care if they are against your team, it makes it more fun anyway. Enjoy.CurtOUhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/07018500518521964682noreply@blogger.comBlogger358125tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7697221603728608285.post-5870853252897099322015-03-15T11:27:00.001-04:002015-03-15T11:27:59.955-04:00Still Alive on 3/15Alright, just five games remaining in the regular season before the brackets are revealed. Biggest casualty number of the year occurred on Wednesday. Lost a total of 33 teams and gained out AUTO bid. Still only BYU as the one ZOMBIE. Now 184 dead and only 167 alive. Here is who left us on Wednesday...
Only one AUTO bid handed out on Wednesday. Lafayette gets it done in the Patriot over American. They look like an easy out in the tourney next week.
No Championship games on Thursday.

The final four conferences tip off on Thursday. In the American I like the Owls of Temple. Do I really think they'll win? No, but I'm rooting for them. Big Sky is another wide open tourney, I'll take the Grizz of Montana. The Big West has a few favorites, but I'm going with the Rainbow Warriors of Hawaii. They look good this year. I hope UL Lafayette wins the Sun Belt so everyone can be confused on their brackets.

Now only four days of basketball left before the brackets are revealed. Almost there. Enjoy.
We lost another eight teams on Tuesday and even picked up our first ZOMBIE. Also, four more AUTO bids were handed out. Here is who died on Tuesday...

ACC - Georgia Tech, Wake Forest
MEAC - Bethune Cookman, North Carolina A&T
NORTHEAST - St. Francis (NY)
HORIZON - Green Bay
SUMMIT - South Dakota State
SWAC - Grambling State

Here is who scanned their tickets on Tuesday by winning their conference tourneys...

NORTHEAST - Robert Morris (Won at St. Francis, who was going for their first dance ever.)
HORIZON - Valparaiso (Won a terrible game against Green Bay. Crusaders won't win a game in the tourney.)
SUMMIT - North Dakota State (Another team that could knock someone off in the tourney.)
WEST COAST - Gonzaga (Look out, this may be the year they do something. Scorers, bigs, defense, they finally have it all.)

And we have our first ZOMBIE team of the year. This team is not dead, but are they really alive? We don't know.

WEST COAST - Brigham Young (RPI of 37 puts them up there, but only 1 Top 50 win and 3 losses against teams outside of the Top 100. Those aren't killers, but it definitely keeps them from being a lock. Not sure if they'll get in or not, kind of depends what the other bubble teams do.)
Just one Championship game on Wednesday. The Patriot League has two teams facing off with neither team having an above .500 conference record. I'm thinking American takes it home.

A whopping ten conferences tip off on Wednesday. Here are my picks...

ATLANTIC 10 - Dayton (VCU, Rhode Island, Richmond all overrated. So it's Dayton or Davidson.)
BIG 12 - Baylor (To me, this is the best conference top to bottom, but no one is great.)
BIG EAST - Villanova (They are scorching hot right now, no one is knocking them off.)
BIG TEN - Wisconsin (This conference is super weak after the Badgers.)
CONFERENCE USA - Louisiana Tech (Wide open, should be a fun one.)
MOUNTAIN WEST - San Diego State (Starting to get hot at the right time, have the scorers.)
PAC 12 - Arizona (One of the best three teams in the nation.)
SEC - Kentucky (Hope not though.)
SOUTHLAND - Stephen F Austin (Should be a cakewalk.)
WAC - New Mexico State (You see the other teams in this conference? WOW!)

Five more days of basketball until the Selection. Pumped. Enjoy.
Thirteen more teams were eliminated on Monday. Now 143 total are dead and 208 are still alive. Still no ZOMBIE teams and only one LOCK. That will end starting Tuesday. Here are the teams that passed away on Monday...

MEAC - Savannah State, Morgan State
MAC - Northern Illinois, Miami (OH), Ohio, Ball State
COLONIAL - William & Mary
SOUTHERN - Furman
SUMMIT - South Dakota, Oral Roberts
WEST COAST - Pepperdine, Portland
MAAC - Iona

As mentioned earlier, three more AUTO bids were handed out on Monday. Northeastern ended William & Mary's bid for their first dance ever. Wofford is good, they might be able to win a game in the tourney. And Manhattan pulled off a pretty big upset over Iona. Choke job by the Gaels.
Two more conferences start their tourneys on Tuesday. I'll take North Carolina in the ACC. I just think they are right there. They are getting better and they can score. If they get hot, watch out. The SWAC should be a Texas Southern walkthrough. They won at Michigan State and at Kansas State this year, they can play well in big games.

Four more teams will earn their way into the dance on Tuesday. The Horizon has a matchup of two very underwhelming teams. I think Green Bay is worse than Valpo, so I'll take Valpo. St. Francis, NY is looking for their first tourney ever, hopefully they win. The Summit will be won by a state school from Dakota, obviously. And Gonzaga will dominate again and cement their two seed.

Now only 6 more days of hoops before the brackets are revealed. Enjoy.

Three more finals on Monday. Three more tickets will be scanned. In the Colonial, William & Mary will go for their first trip to the dance ever. I hope Iona wins the MAAC, they are good and they're 8th in the nation in scoring. Wofford is the class of the Southern, they should be able to beat Furman, who is now 11-21, say what??.

Saturday will bring us our first AUTO bid of the year. The Ohio Valley Conference has their title game with Murray State facing . Murray State is undefeated in the conference this year and has Cameron Payne, POY. This dude is the real deal, the Racers should take this one. We may have another AUTO bid in the IVY as well. Yale has a one game lead on Harvard, but if Yale loses and Harvard wins on Saturday, there will be a tie and a tiebreaker game will need to be played. If Yale wins or Harvard loses, Yale will be in the big dance.

Only the Summit League starts their tourney on Saturday. The winner will be a state school from one of the Dakota's, mark it down.

Only 9 more days of basketball before Selection Sunday. Enjoy.
Now a total of 69 teams are dead and 282 are still alive. No Zombies, Locks, or Autos as of yet. Here are the teams that don't need to look at their schedule the rest of the year after their losses on Thursday...

MAAC - Niagara, Fairfield, Quinnipiac
PATRIOT - Boston University, Lehigh, Navy, Holy Cross
MISSOURI VALLEY - Missouri State, Drake
ATLANTIC SUN - Lipscomb, Florida Gulf Coast
OHIO VALLEY - Tennessee Martin, Eastern Illinois

Three more conferences get their tourneys started on Friday. They are the Southern, Colonial, and West Coast. Wofford is the top dog in the Southern. They are another candidate to upset someone in the Big Dance, if they make it. The Colonial has a four way tie at the top. James Madison is the hottest team at the moment, I'll take them. I'm a Gonzaga fan this year, they are very, very talented. I don't think BYU can beat them again and St. Mary's is weak.

Now only 10 days of basketball before the brackets are revealed. We'll know soon enough. Enjoy.
A total of 13 teams were eliminated from the title chase. There are now 56 teams dead and 295 alive. Here are the schools that lost their chances on Tuesday...

BIG SOUTH - Campbell, Presbyterian, Liberty
AMERICA EAST - UMBC, Hartford, Maine, Binghamton
NORTHEAST - Wagner, Mount St. Mary's, LIU Brooklyn, Sacred Heart
OHIO VALLY - SE Missouri State, SIU Edwardsville

Two more conferences start their tourneys on Thursday. In the MAAC, Iona is the favorite. And if and when the Gaels do win, I think they upset someone in the Big Dance. The Missouri Valley is going to be a good one. Northern Iowa is really good, but if you just watch the games, it's obvious that the Shockers have more firepower, I'll take them.

Only 11 more days of basketball until the brackets are revealed. Enjoy.
A total of 308 teams still have a shot at the title. Here are the teams that can go ahead and look forward to next year after falling on Tuesday...

ATLANTIC SUN - Kennesaw State, Jacksonville, Stetson
PATRIOT - Loyola (MD), Army
HORIZON - Youngstown State, Wright State

Four more tournaments get going on Wednesday. We actually have some day games, which are awesome. The four tourneys that tip off are: Big South, America East, Northeast, and Ohio Valley. The Big South is about as wide open as any conference, there are five teams within one game at the top. So I'm thinking 8-23 Liberty is going to take it. The Great Danes of Albany are the class of the America East. If anyone else wins this tourney, it's a major upset. The Northeast Conference will be pretty wide open as well, but St. Francis is the top seed and gets home court if they get to the final, I'll go with them. No one will win the Ohio Valley except for Murray State, take that to the bank.

At least 13 more teams will be eliminated on Wednesday. The train is starting to pick up some steam. Enjoy the games.
Monday is the last day with no casualties until the brackets are revealed on March 15th. There are a whopping 351 teams in Division I this year, so there will be a lot of teams dropping off in a hurry these next two weeks. At this very moment we still have 315 teams still with the shot at winning the title and being immortalized. So, simple subtraction says that we have already lost 36 schools that can no longer dream of hoisting the trophy. Here are the schools that are dead and will not be coming back alive...

WAC - Grand Canyon
SUN BELT - Appalachian State
SOUTHLAND - Lamar, Houston Baptist, Central Arkansas, Incarnate Word, Abilene Christian

We have three Conference Tourney's kicking off on Tuesday, the Patriot League, Atlantic Sun, and Horizon. In the Patriot it looks like Bucknell is the team to beat since they are the top seed and get to play at home. The story line in the Atlantic Sun will be whether or not Florida Gulf Coast and Dunk City can get in and make another run. The Horizon is a toss up, Green Bay, Valparaiso, Cleveland State and Oakland are all evenly matched.

Check back Tuesday night to see who else bit the big one and joined the rest in the graveyard. Enjoy the games.
For the heck of it I calculated what the hitters numbers would look like if they kept up their current paces. Warning, nothing looks that good but some of the numbers can be encouraging depending on what your expectations were starting the season. Below are the numbers, then I'll point out a few things that caught my eye. Enjoy.

AVG. HR. RBI. 2B. BB. K. SB. R.
.245. 6. 36. 18. 24. 114. 66. 78. Billy Hamilton
.256. 6. 36. 12. 6. 54 18. 36. Chris Heisey
.260. 12. 60. 24. 24. 114. 0. 36. Ryan Ludwick
.160. 0. 6. 6. 36. 54. 12. 12. Roger Bernadina
.220. 18. 84. 24. 114. 162. 30. 102. Jay Bruce
.280. 24. 60. 30. 144. 132. 6. 90. Joey Votto
.255. 6. 36. 24. 18. 150. 0. 42. Brandon Phillips
.180. 6. 54. 30. 18. 90. 0. 24. Zack Cozart
.247. 24. 72. 36. 60. 120. 12. 84. Todd Frazier
.143. 0. 6. 0. 12. 18. 0. 6. Ramon Santiago
.200. 0. 6. 6. 0. 6. 6. 6. Neftali Soto
.200. 0. 0. 0. 0. 12. 0. 0. Tucker Barnhart
.468. 18. 78. 36. 24. 60. 6. 60. Devin Mesoraco
.304. 6. 18. 24. 24. 48. 12. 18. Brayan Pena

Hamilton ends the year with a .245 average, 36 RBI, 66 SB, and 78 Runs, I think we would take that.

Bruce with 114 walks and 30 SB would be nice. The 162 K's wouldn't be.

Votto with only 60 RBI and 132 K's. So much for not getting any pitches to hit.

Phillips on pace for 18 walks and 150 K's? Good Lord!

Mesoraco's numbers would be awesome if he gets back soon and stays hot.

Heisey, Santiago, Soto, and Barnhart have worked one whole walk combined.

Only the 2 good catchers have averages over .300.

As bad as Cozart has been, his K total isn't too bad, maybe that's a sign some balls will start to find holes.

Could we really go a year without a guy hitting 25 homers?

The big number is the pace of only winning 72 games.

Please feel free to point out some other good and bad numbers you might see, besides the obvious of course. Thanks for reading.
The last five conference tournaments get started on Thursday. The Big Sky has been dominated by Weber State, they should win the tourney. UC Irvine is the favorite in the Big West. We have four championship games on Tuesday. The Horizon pits Milwaukee vs. Wright State, the Raiders have a losing record in the conference, you don't see those teams make the dance very often. Mount St. Mary's vs. Robert Morris is your Northeast Conference Final. Robert Morris has been the team to beat all year. It'll be IPFW vs. North Dakota State in the Summit Championship. NDSU has been trouncing teams, I think that will continue. In the West Coast it's Gonzaga vs. BYU. Both of the teams should have a chance to get into the tourney, win or lose, but it's best if they win.

Two more conferences start their tourneys on Tuesday. The SWAC will get started with Southern as the top seed. Conference USA is a tourney you really want to watch. A four way tie at the top at 13-3? Has that ever happened? No idea who wins this one, I'll take Southern Mississippi.
We did get our second AUTO bid of the tourney on Saturday, Eastern Kentucky won the Ohio Valley Conference Championship over Belmont.

OHIO VALLEY - Eastern Kentucky

I thought we had our first ZOMBIE team on Saturday but I have changed my mind, Green Bay is officially dead. With an RPI of 60 and only 21 Division 1 wins, I just can't see it happening. So here is where we stand...

TOTAL 351
DEAD 116
ALIVE 235
ZOMBIE 0
AUTO 2
LOCK 0

There will be three Championship games on Sunday which will bring us up to five AUTO bids by the end of the day. In the Big South Championship we have Winthrop vs. Coastal Carolina. Winthrop has won both matchups this year between the two teams. In the Atlantic Sun matchup we have Mercer vs. Florida Gulf Coast. Can FGCU make the tourney and make a run like last year? They split between Mercer earlier this year. Will Indiana State give Wichita State a game? I'm thinking they will, this will be a good one in the Missouri Valley.

No conferences start their tourneys on Sunday, but we have some major conferences finishing up their regular season, so plenty of action to watch. Any thoughts on Green Bay or anything else we've seen this week? Thanks for reading.
The Harvard Crimson clinched the Ivy League. Only 67 spots left to fill in the next nine days. On the other side we lost 17 more teams on Friday. And to make it official, here are the teams that received an auto bid...
Two more conferences get started on Saturday, we got the Summit League and the America East. North Dakota State and Vermont are the favorites in those conferences. We also have our first conference final on Saturday. The Ohio Valley Conference will have Eastern Kentucky vs. Belmont, both teams looked really good last night. Both teams can score it up, should be a really good game. Let's not forget about the non tourney games going on Saturday, some really good ones to watch, should be a fun day. Thanks for reading.
Two more conferences start their tourneys on Friday. The Southern Conference is being run by Davidson again this year. They are on a serious roll the last six years. The Colonial tournament should be a good one. Towson has had a good season and the Blue Hens of Delaware have been tough all season as well. We could get our first AUTO Bid on Friday. With a win over Yale, Harvard will clinch the IVY and punch their ticket to the big dance. Some early afternoon games on Friday, makes the day go faster, works for me. Thanks for reading.
Three more conferences start their tourneys on Thursday. The MAAC is Iona's tourney to lose, will they get it done? Can Wichita State win the MVC and close out an undefeated season? Will Gonzaga win the WCC and get the auto bid, or will they have to wait for Selection Sunday to hear their name? 11 more days of basketball until the bracket is revealed. A lot of basketball left until then. Thanks for reading.
